Is it Best to Cover My Deck in Wintertime?

As winter comes upon us, certain people cover their deck in order to provide protection from severe weather.
Even though some suggest that covering your deck may limit airflow and could possibly cause warping and buckling in your boards, if your decking is of the traditional wooden deck variety, covering it might be a good idea. Investigate with your decking manufacturer prior to covering your deck with a tarp for the winter season.

If your decking is TimberTech deck, you have no reason to cover any part of your deck during winter. Not only is our sturdy composite decking highly moisture-resistant, severe weather will not damage it, even if the snow piles up over the harsher winter months.

How does TimberTech composite decking withstand winter?
The ease with which your wooden deck can convert into a skating rink in the winter is one disadvantage of hardwood decking. Water accumulates in the wood’s grooves, then it freezes during the coldest moments, creating a surface that is dangerously slippery.
TimberTech decking does not do any of this. The risk of our slip resistant composite boards freezing over is lessened as they do not collect as much water.
But, if your TimberTech deck in fact does become covered in snow or ice, make sure to take this suggestions into consideration:

·        Utilize a plastic shovel when removing snow from your deck. Do not utilize a metal shovel, as it could cause damage to your deck boards.
·        Utilize calcium chloride or rock salt to melt all ice that forms on your deck. Do not try to chip away or break the ice; this could also cause damage to your decking in the end.
·        You may remove any residual salts by power-washing your deck (maximum pressure: 1,500 psi) when the weather warms again.
